TL;DR. A senior farm hand salary in 2026 runs $70,000 to $90,000 base salaried, or $33 to $43 an hour on rostered weeks of 38 to 45 hours, with a vehicle or on-farm house on top. That sits above the Pastoral Award ceiling, and the gap is what holds experienced operators.

Key takeaways

  • The award floor: Pastoral Award farm and livestock hand levels 5 to 8 pay $27.55 to $31.64 an hour full time from 1 July 2026 (Fair Work Ombudsman pay guide, linked below).
  • The senior farm hand salary market runs $33 to $43 an hour for experienced operators, above the award ceiling; salaried roles run $70,000 to $90,000, set by scale and enterprise type.
  • The package adds superannuation at 12 per cent, a vehicle worth about $15,000 or an on-farm house where provided; paid overtime through seeding and harvest is the variable, and few roles at this tier carry a formal incentive.
  • Our recent senior farm hand placements sit predominantly with corporate and fund-backed cropping and pastoral operators, and the step-up path to assistant farm manager is real.

A senior farm hand salary in Australia runs one of two ways in 2026: an hourly rate of $33 to $43 across a rostered week of 38 to 45 hours, or a salaried base of $70,000 to $90,000 on the larger corporate operations. Both structures carry a vehicle or an on-farm house on top, and both price well above the award.

Job boards blur this picture. A housed role advertises a lower base than the same role unhoused, and hourly roles advertise a rate that says nothing about the roster behind it. The senior farm hand salary figures below come from our own placements with corporate and fund-backed operators, stated in the structures the market uses.

What does a senior farm hand earn in Australia in 2026?

An experienced senior farm hand earns $33 to $43 an hour on hourly-structured roles, or $70,000 to $90,000 base where the role is salaried, with the all-in position running $95,000 to $115,000 once superannuation and the vehicle or housing line are counted. Our placements behind these figures ran from late 2024 to late 2025, predominantly with corporate and fund-backed cropping and pastoral operators. The farm hand and machinery operator band in our salary guide runs $75,000 to $95,000 on a 45-hour basis, and the senior tier sits at the working heart of that band.

What are the award pay rates for a senior farm hand in 2026?

Cropping and pastoral operations fall under the Pastoral Award, and a senior farm hand with supervisory or specialised machinery duties usually classifies at farm and livestock hand level 5 to level 8. From 1 July 2026 those levels pay $27.55 to $31.64 an hour full time, and casuals with the 25 per cent loading reach $39.55 at level 8, per the Fair Work Ombudsman pay guide. Those are floors, and treating them as a budget recruits for a different tier. The operator who runs your spraying program without supervision, holds workshop standards and leads casuals through harvest is priced by the market, and the market pays above the award ceiling for that person.

The award sets the floor. The senior farm hand who runs a program without supervision is priced above it.

What drives a senior farm hand salary band?

Scale leads. The bigger the program, the machinery fleet and the casual crew through peaks, the higher in the band the role sits. Enterprise type comes next: irrigated cotton and intensive broadacre cropping programs carry more technology and tighter windows than dryland grazing, and pay for it. Cash position sits behind both, because the corporate and fund-backed operators with strong balance sheets defend their rosters hardest. Scarcity does the rest: agriculture employs around 247,000 people nationally (ABS Labour Force Survey), the National Farmers’ Federation reports labour shortages dragging on rural productivity, and the operational tier is where that bites first. Remoteness shows up mainly through the housing line rather than the rate itself: the remote pastoral roles carry the house, the closer-in cropping roles carry the vehicle. The hours structure does the rest of the work, since a $34 hourly role at 45 rostered hours with paid overtime through seeding and harvest out-earns a flat salary that looks higher on the advertisement.

How is a senior farm hand package structured?

Five parts, and the advertisement should state all of them plainly.

  1. Base or hourly rate. $70,000 to $90,000 salaried, or $33 to $43 an hour with the roster stated.
  2. Superannuation. 12 per cent in 2026.
  3. Vehicle. $12,000 to $18,000 work-use; more with personal use.
  4. Housing (where provided). An on-farm house on remote or larger holdings, worth $15,000 a year and up; often none on settled, closer-in country.
  5. Overtime and incentive. Paid overtime through seeding, spraying and harvest is the real variable component at this tier. A structured incentive is the exception; most operators do not offer one at this level.

How does a senior farm hand salary compare to the step-up roles?

The rung above is the assistant farm manager, whose base runs $95,000 to $125,000 at corporate and fund-backed operators, and the gap between the two bands is the price of judgement calls the manager no longer has to check. The step-up is not theoretical: two of the six assistant farm managers we placed in the year to mid-2026 came from senior farm hand roles. Pay your senior hand at the market and name that path early, and the bench builds itself. Our guide to hiring a senior farm hand covers the screening that finds the ones worth promoting.

Who produced this benchmark?

March Talent Partners produced this benchmark. We’re a specialist Australian agricultural recruitment consultancy, and senior farm hands are among the roles we place most often, for corporate and family operators across broadacre, cotton and horticulture. The figures come from that placement and benchmarking work, corroborated against the Pastoral Award, advertised pay and peak-body data. The full band set is in our Australian Agricultural Salary Guide.

Senior farm hand salary FAQ

How much does a senior farm hand earn in Australia?

A senior farm hand salary runs $70,000 to $90,000 base salaried, or $33 to $43 an hour across a 38 to 45 hour rostered week, in 2026. All-in, with superannuation and a vehicle or on-farm house, the package runs $95,000 to $115,000 at corporate and fund-backed operators.

What is the award pay rate for a senior farm hand?

Under the Pastoral Award, farm and livestock hand levels 5 to 8 pay $27.55 to $31.64 an hour full time from 1 July 2026, and casuals reach $39.55 at level 8 with loading. That is the legal floor. The market for experienced senior hands prices above it.

Do senior farm hands get a house or a vehicle?

Usually one or the other. Cropping roles typically carry a maintained vehicle worth about $15,000 a year; remote pastoral roles carry an on-farm house worth $15,000 and up. Establish whether housing is included before comparing advertised figures, because a housed role advertises a lower base than the same role unhoused.
