Farm hand and machinery operator salary in Australia
A farm hand or machinery operator earns a base of $75,000 to $95,000*, with hours and overtime doing much of the work.
All figures are base salary in Australian dollars. They exclude superannuation (12 per cent) and the package on top (housing, vehicle and bonuses). Figures as at June 2026.

Comparing these bands with advertised salaries. Packages for on-farm roles frequently include accommodation, and a housed role advertises a materially lower base than the same role unhoused. Before measuring an advertised salary against these bands, establish whether housing is included. Housing and vehicle values are shown separately throughout this guide.
*Based on a 45-hour week. With 60-plus hour weeks through peak season, total earnings run well above the band.
At a 45-hour week the band works out to about $30 to $41 an hour; the advertised hourly market runs $35 to $45, with hours and overtime arrangements doing much of the work. The award floor for these roles sits near $51,000 to $52,000 a year, so the market clears well above it.

Housing is commonly provided, worth around $15,000, and is standard at remote postings. A vehicle is not standard at this level, though some operators provide one. Bonuses are rare, up to 5 per cent where they exist.
What moves the number.
Machinery breadth and licences set the base, with truck and B-double work pushing the top. The seasonal hours structure matters as much as the base. District demand moves it: tight cropping districts pay flat hourly rates at the top of the range. Remote postings add roughly 5 to 10 per cent to base, but the bigger remote premium shows up as housing, keep and longer paid hours rather than a higher base.
