General manager salary in Australian agriculture

A general manager running farming operations earns a base of $195,000 to $300,000, set by the scale of the operation, from a single or multi-site operation through to a large-scale or portfolio operation.

All figures are base salary in Australian dollars. They exclude superannuation (12 per cent) and the package on top (housing, vehicle and bonuses). Figures as at June 2026.

Operation scaleLowTypicalHigh
Single or multi-site operation$195,000$230,000$265,000
Large-scale or portfolio operation$265,000$285,000$300,000

Most roles at this level are not advertised with a figure, so the top of the band leans on benchmarking and placement data rather than open ads. The top tier is set by size and span, not ownership: a large operation by team and footprint, or a multi-operation portfolio, whether corporate, institutional or large private and family-owned. Read it as the going rate for that scale of remit, not a ceiling.

Benefits on top.

A fully maintained vehicle with private use is standard, worth $18,000 to $25,000. Housing is provided where the role is based on a property, worth $25,000 to $35,000; multi-site roles are often un-housed. Short-term incentives run 10 to 25 per cent of base, with the more structured plans at corporate and institutional operators; large private operations more often use profit share or a discretionary bonus. Long-term incentives, tied to asset growth or an equity-style instrument, appear mainly at corporate and portfolio level.

What moves the number.

Operation scale is the dominant lever, from a single operation through to a multi-asset portfolio. Development and greenfield mandates carry a premium. Corporate governance and reporting load lift the figure above an owner-run equivalent of the same size.
