Cotton farm manager salary in Australia
A cotton farm manager earns a base of $130,000 to $200,000 and above, set by irrigated hectares and the megalitres of water under management, with remoteness adding a premium on top.
All figures are base salary in Australian dollars. They exclude superannuation (12 per cent) and the package on top (housing, vehicle and bonuses). Figures as at June 2026.
| Operation scale (irrigated ha and ML) | Low | Typical | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smaller or regional-hub program (to around 2,000 ha) | $130,000 | $140,000 | $150,000 |
| Larger or major program (around 2,000 to 5,000 ha) | $150,000 | $160,000 | $170,000 |
| Very large or very remote (toward 5,000 ha and above) | $170,000 | $185,000 | $200,000+ |
The hectare marks are working cuts from the banding evidence, not hard thresholds; megalitres of water under management move a program up the same way. Cotton pays a remoteness premium rather than a crop premium. Major cotton hubs sit in the bands above; very remote inland districts run 15 to 20 per cent higher, reaching $200,000 and above at the top of the corporate market. A very large irrigated program, 5,000 hectares and up under one manager, steps past this role toward aggregation manager pay of $210,000 to $250,000 and over.
Benefits on top.
On-farm housing is standard, around $25,000. A vehicle with private use is standard, $18,000 to $25,000. Bonuses run 10 to 20 per cent of base, and on larger family operations a per-bale-over-target or profit-share structure appears.
What moves the number.
Irrigated hectares and megalitres of water under management set the base. Water security year to year matters. Whether the operation owns its picker or contracts harvest, and the governance load at a fund-backed operator, both move the figure.
